Biography - Claire
Always motivated by a desire to make a difference, I started out in health, working in the expanse of the beautiful East Kimberley including many Aboriginal communities. That experience was a steep learning curve in social justice, tackling difficult policy problems, and trying to identify the root cause of complex issues.
Being an outdoors kind of person, I always had a passion for environmental conservation. It became clear to me that social and environmental problems were deeply enmeshed, and I discovered the concept of sustainability. As the enormity of the challenge posed by climate change revealed itself, it was impossible for me not to try to do something about it. So, over a period of time, I developed a plan for my own sustainability project, Cycling for Cohesion.
This project saw me cycle from Mexico to Argentina, collecting, sharing and showcasing stories from people who were working to make the world a better place. The purpose was to use these stories, as well as my own, to inspire action, facilitate better understanding of sustainability related topics and concepts and ultimately contribute to a cultural shift.
When I got back to Perth I started my Masters in Sustainability Studies and soon made the transition to the electricity sector. Because of my constant drive to make a difference I am very excited to find myself working in this area. Electricity is such a fundamental building block of society and as far as sustainability goes, if we can't transform our electricity sector then we are really ging to be in trouble!
My areas of interest are the use of deliberative democratic processes to inform public policy and decision making, development of active citizenship and creative models of innovation and governance.
